Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

The champion entered the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.

Play-Off Climax

That led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
