Anthony Barry Explains His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach featured at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer began as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his destiny.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a name with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a systematic approach enabling us for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the England collective and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend long hours toward. Our responsibility to not only anticipate with developments but to beat them and innovate. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections among them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This is the time to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” he comments. “The physicality, the adaptability, the physicality, the honesty. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run as they do in club games, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, attacking high up. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. During his education for his pro license, he was worried regarding the final talk, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those convinced and he brought Barry on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he got Barry out of Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
