Chicago White Sox Sign Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Agreement.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Player Perks

The deal features a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16M for the next season and seventeen million for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for earning the league MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing between fourth and tenth.
  • An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.

The contract includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization get a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever player from Japan to suit up for the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, joins a emerging lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mainly at first, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic one-run win. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he blasted a tying home run in the early innings, helping Japan's eventual championship win.

The lefty slugger is set to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
