A significant manufacturing zone situated on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with radioactive contamination following a government taskforce found presence of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants within the site, which encompasses companies shipping chilled marine products.

Emergency Response and Product Withdrawal

This discovery has led to emergency cleanup operations and the moving of local residents, coming after a comparable contamination alert in the United States that was linked to the Indonesian facilities.

A major international retailer is among the companies that have recalled products from their stores after the finding.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

Indonesian authorities initiated an inquiry after the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a shipment of frozen breaded prawns exported by an Indonesian firm.

The FDA released an advisory instructing distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, although the detected amount was far below the authority's action threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an immediate hazard to the public.

The authority explained: “The primary health effect of concern after extended, repeated small amount contact (eg through eating of contaminated products or water over a period) is an increased risk of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radiation tests showed at least twenty-two factories in the manufacturing area were affected. The official team did not name the twenty-one additional production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately receive decontamination processes conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

A senior official declared that residents living in highly contaminated areas would be moved until the site was cleaned, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health authorities also performed checks on nearby workers and residents located close to the industrial estate, identifying 9 people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. They were sent to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.

Cleanup and Containment Measures

The affected locations will immediately receive cleanup procedures by the national atomic energy agency. Authorities have also selected the site of a scrap metal factory as an isolation facility for contaminated materials.

The country, which has no nuclear power plants or arms program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the nation from abroad.

Origin of Contamination and Trade Restrictions

An official representative informed the media that recycled metal imports were the likely cause of contamination and announced the authorities would promptly impose limits on metal waste arrivals. It was stated that vehicles were also being inspected for potential contamination as they traveled through the area.

Regarding Caesium-137 and Public Concerns

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear isotope that usually enters the ecosystem as a result of atomic testing or accidents, like Fukushima or Chernobyl. Trace quantities are found in earth, products and the atmosphere.

The amount detected in the frozen shrimp was much less than FDA action levels, but the agency explained long-term exposure to even small amounts of the element was associated to an higher risk of the disease.

The withdrawn seafood was available at large store locations across at least a dozen US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
