Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
