NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored 86 opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies

Miami Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match since player Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping federal probe into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.

But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year history.

Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four points and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through this."

Portland additionally secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events

Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
