A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.

The successful bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which manages restaurants domestically and internationally.

"The year's tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the annual first sale.

Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the winning bid," stating, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price soared before you knew it."

This new purchase exceeds his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to shatter his own record once again.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another food company, which stated the fish would be featured at its locations across Japan.

The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

From Auction to Plate

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for diners at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've started the year in a positive way after tasting something so auspicious as the year begins," shared one satisfied diner.
