The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit series coming to an end—and a second season already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception

One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
