The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
